Jordan - episode 3
Discovering ancient Jordan. We loaded up in our little bus and off we go for a full day of adventures. First stop north of Amman, Jerash. Unbelievable. The world's best preserved and most complete Greco-Roman city. Inhabited since the Bronx age. We wandered through the monumental temples of Zeus and Artemis, baths, theaters, Byzantine churches. It was very impressive as we walked the long colonnade lined streets noticing ruts of the many chariots that passed this way. The forum is intact in a perfect circle, symmetrical stone floor and impressive columns on its perimeter Notable is the triple arched gate built to honor Emperor Hadrian in 129AD. Next to the gate is the 250 meter hippodrome. One could just imagine the crowds cheering on the chariot races. 100 to 200 AD was the height of when once this impressive city thrived. Once speculation as to why this city survived so much intact, is that it is haunted. Makes you want to check that out right? :) Lunch was an adventure into the Jordanian cuisine. Have eaten more lamb in these last 2 days than in my whole life along with humus and tahini. The afternoon we headed off to Ajloun and the Saracen castle. Not sure if this fortress is haunted but could be a possibility.... it was built in the 12th century on the point of the highest hill. You can see it for miles and miles. No pics of the outside to share , windows of the bus a bit dusty and we were bouncing around so not able to get a still shot. Enjoy some of the interior and views down to the valley. The evening ended perfectly with a home hosted meal. Maqklouba! Yum! Check out the recipe. Layers of the ingredients cooked in a large pot. Served by putting a platter over the top and turning it over dumping the ingredients perfect ready to serve. The family were very nice and interesting to talk to. Tomorrow, depart Amman and off to Petra. Be sure to continue reading!
