Czech Republic, now Germany and more Chapter 7b

PASSAU!  Is uniquely located, precisely at the confluence of three rivers, Danube, Inn and Ils. This town was first mentioned as a Roman provincial settlement dating back to 739 when this city's life began. In the 13th century, Episcopal bishops ruled. Then in 1803, Passau became what is know today as a Bavarian city. After a great fire in 1662, Italian baroque masters created unique baroque architecture with an Italian flair. The most impressive is St Stevens cathedral, and, what they boast, the largest pipe organ in the world. ( this info is from the brochure, in truth, the organ is the second largest).

The Minnetonka contingent braved the approaching rain storm to go back to St Stevens to listen to this famous organ. Apparently there was to be 30 minutes of practice. Much to our surprise, a man invited us up to the choir loft!!  Which was fascinating, would have been even more so if we understood German. The organist was lecturing to a group of people. About the only word we understood was the occasional "organ". He played this magnificent instrument for us .... My ears are still ringing....

Historically shipping has been the mainstay industry. Today seems more like tourism has taken the lead. Never seen so many barge cruisers boats in my life. There had to be a few dozen any any point in time.  And we thought cruising was only in the Mediterranean islands....

Barvaria is amazing and fascinating part of the world to explore...

Enjoy some pics....over a beer...or two ....
