China! Day 2 part d
The last stop of the afternoon in the daylight and return after dark, the most recognizable area of Shanghai, the Bund. This word comes from the Persian word band, means embankment, levee or dam. The Bund in Shanghai is a waterfront area centrally located in this city along the Huangpu River in the eastern part of the Huangpu District. This area faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong district. The tallest building is the Shanghai Tower. Yesterday we zipped in less than a minute to the observation deck, 128 floors up. The view from both top of the tower and river level are quite impressive. The Bund is the location of what was once the rich and powerful center of the foreign establishment in Shanghai. The quite impressive financial buildings (not in photos) were built from the 1860's to 1930's. We poked into one of the banks that allow visitors. The detail and architecture was amazing. Back to hotel for our nightly beers and snacks on the veranda with Mark and Rosanna. Always fun. An employee came out to our table, not sure what she was telling us. Thought that we should not be there or to clean up our mess. She came and left a few times, apparently we were ok when her last appearance was with a package of napkins. So guess we were not in too much trouble. The last adventure for the evening was the nightly light show back at the Bund. Holy cats!! That was totally cool and quite impressive. This was not listed in our itinerary but something you cannot miss if ever you get to Shanghai. Tomorrow Suzhou. Keep following this adventure!
