Fwd: China! Day 15 part d

Optional tour this afternoon to the Sera Monastery and the Norbulingka Palace. The Sera Monastery is one of the regions largest. Built in 1419 was once home to  7000 monks. Today, there is about 600 monks who reside here. One notable feature in this monastery is they have the largest tsokchen, assembly hall. Four stories high and nearly 11,000 square feet of floor space. Our timing was pretty good, we were able to witness one of their daily debates. Quite noisy. The standing monk posses a question to the siting monk who must reply with an acceptable answer. We saw lots of mandalas, Buddhas, inside of temples and assembly hall — no photos allowed. Only visual memories. Here are a couple from the outside of the structures.
